Three Christian families are assaulted on three straight days in West Bengal.
In West Medinipur district, groups of 10 to 15 people dragged Christians out of their homes and threatened to kill them unless they renounced Christ.
Barnabas Aid published on October 30, 2026 a report of attacks on three related Christian families in a village in West Medinipur district, West Bengal. The attacks took place on three consecutive days, October 18 to 20.
What happened
- October 18 and 19: a group of 10 to 15 people attacked the homes of three Christian women and their families. They dragged the Christians outside and tried to force them to take part in religious rituals.
- October 20: several attackers took two husbands to an isolated spot. According to one of them, they threatened to kill them unless they renounced Christ. The same day, further death threats were made against one of the women and other relatives.
- Police: one of the women filed a First Information Report naming 13 people who attacked her house on October 18. Police assured the families of security and said they would investigate. As of publication, no one had been arrested.
- Reaction: church leaders condemned the attack. The Bengal Christian Council demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible.
Why it matters
Barnabas Aid describes the attackers only as extremists. The case adds to the wave of attacks in the state since May, which the Bengal Christian Council has already taken to human rights commissions and which, on October 9, reached a Bible convention of more than 2,000 people. The council also sent a memorandum to the state government asking for an end to violence and harassment of Christians. West Bengal is where the project's theology course in Bengali begins.
Pray for the three families, that they will feel upheld and keep both their faith and their gentleness; for the local police, that they will investigate impartially; and for the attackers, that they will be reached by God's grace.
