The last Christian families in a Kanker village lose their homes over their faith.
After weeks of pressure, a mob of about 150 people beat three families. When they came back from the hospital, their belongings were on the road.
Morning Star News published on October 30, 2026 the account of the attack on September 21 against three related Christian families, 18 people in all, in a village in Kanker district, Chhattisgarh. According to the report, they were the last Christians in the place.
What the report says
- Growing pressure: for three years the families had been barred from worshipping at home and met in a room they built on their own farmland. Starting September 6, a mob disrupted those gatherings on three consecutive Sundays. Between September 13 and 20 they were summoned six times before the village head and council, and lost access to subsidized government rations.
- The attack: on September 21, about 150 people with wooden sticks vandalized the homes and beat women, children, men and the elderly. Four people needed hospital treatment, and some still felt pain five weeks later.
- Police: the station, less than two miles away, did not respond. Officers came only after a relative reached the district superintendent. The families say nothing was done because the attack had not been recorded on phones.
- Afterward: on returning, the families found their belongings on the road and were ordered to leave the village. Local officials pressed them to renounce Christianity and threatened to confiscate their land. Two families agreed to convert to Hinduism; the third refused and decided to leave.
Why it matters
Hindu nationalist groups call these conversions of tribal Christians "ghar wapsi" (homecoming), while Christian leaders describe them as forced conversions. By the report's account, the pressure came from the village and from local officials, who are part of the system meant to protect the families. The article carries no response from police or the officials named. Open Doors ranks India 12th on its 2026 World Watch List.
Pray for the families, that God will heal the injured and shelter those who had to leave; for those who gave way under pressure, that they will be held by the mercy of Christ; and for the authorities, that they will fulfill their duty to protect every citizen.
